How Miranda Kerr Gave Love A Second Chance After Depressing Divorce From Orlando Bloom

After her divorce from Orlando Bloom, Miranda Kerr fell into a deep depression. She didn't think she would find love with someone who was 7-years her junior but Evan Spiegel surprised her.

When Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel, the co-founder and CEO of Snap Inc., met in 2014, the supermodel was a single mom working to master co-parenting with her ex-husband, Orlando Bloom. She had also just overcome “a really bad depression” caused by the split. The timing might not have seemed perfect for romance, but Miranda’s chance encounter with the Snapchat billionaire sparked something inside her. So much so that she made the first move.

Here’s what we can learn from Miranda Kerr about overcoming heartbreak and giving love a second chance:

In July 2010, Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom made headlines when they said “I do” in a secret ceremony and, in January 2011, they were back in the news with the birth of their first child, “a very healthy and big baby boy” named Flynn. Despite a very clear connection, something was missing and the couple announced their split in 2013 after six years together.

As Kerr explained at the time, the decision was a difficult one, but “it was the right thing to do. We weren’t bringing out the best in each other,” she revealed, adding, "There’s no hostility there, we’ll always be friends."

Keeping a level head and deciding to prioritize their son above all else, the exes agreed to work together to build a strong co-parenting relationship. “There’s no question, for the sake of our son and everything else, we’re going to support one another and love each other as parents to Flynn,” Bloom proclaimed while telling TMZ, “We’re not friends. We’re family.”

Self-care is key in overcoming heartbreak

Look at Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom today and there’s no doubt that the pair achieved their goal of becoming happy, healthy co-parents, but when they first called it quits, Miranda hit a rough patch, telling ELLE in 2016.

When Orlando and I separated, I actually fell into a really bad depression.

It wasn’t until she realized that “every thought you have affects your reality and only you have control of your mind” that she could begin working through the heartbreak. As she told Marie-Claire, "It was the right thing to do. We weren’t bringing out the best in each other."

Embracing self-care, she slowly found happiness again through meditation, aromatherapy oils, yoga and healthy eating. That, in turn, allowed her to build a healthy relationship with her ex and set her up for the opportunity to find love again.

A chance encounter can change everything

It was 2014 and Miranda Kerr was headed to a Louis Vuitton event at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, not knowing that the evening would change her life. Delphine Arnault, the executive vice president of Louis Vuitton, had decided to seat Kerr next to Evan Spiegel because, as she told WSJ Magazine, "I thought, ‘She is very beautiful; I'm sure he will have a good time.’”

She wasn’t wrong. As Miranda revealed, she broke the ice by telling him her favorite song was “Spiegel im Spiegel” by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Evan admitted he didn’t know the tune, but the conversation flowed and the pair eventually exchanged numbers. Then, he left without warning — “All of a sudden, he gets up,” she recalled — and she didn’t hear from him for a month.

Even so, there was something in the air because Miranda’s friend, former Harper’s Bazaar editor Glenda Bailey, told her that very evening, “You’re going to marry that guy.” Miranda felt it too and decided to throw caution to the wind. Rather than worrying about dating conventions or what Evan might think, she grabbed her phone and texted him, writing, “Just wondering — did you ever listen to that song, ‘Spiegel im Spiegel?’”

Romance can blossom from friendship

A month had passed between the time Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel first met and when she reached out to him via text and the pair continued with that slow and steady pace in the months that followed.

Explaining why he hadn’t texted first, Evan told WSJ Magazine he had simply misread the situation. “I thought I had no chance, so I wasn’t going to waste my time,” he admitted. As Kerr told The Times:

It was slow and steady. I was like, ‘Is he even interested?’ But once I let him know I was interested, he was very interested.

Miranda also recalled the pair’s dating timeline in an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, saying, “We met at a dinner in LA for Louis Vuitton and became friends. We were really good friends for a long time before we started dating.” It was now 2015 and their focus was on “having fun together and sharing our time amongst friends and family.”

Evan embraced Miranda's son immediately

From the get-go, Evan understood that Miranda’s top priority was her son and he embraced Flynn immediately. In fact, during the couple’s very first date (which took place at an LA yoga studio) Spiegel gifted Kerr with a homemade gingerbread house that had her and Flynn's names written on it in frosting.

What’s more, rather than being apprehensive about Miranda’s status as a mom or her close bond with her ex, Evan was utterly impressed by Miranda’s masterful co-parenting with Orlando Bloom. “This is one of the things I love about Miranda,” Spiegel told WSJ Magazine. “Everyone is welcome. It’s the Aussie way,” he said, pointing out that Orlando is always welcome in their home.

Opening up about their modern family, he continued, “I am in no way a replacement for Flynn’s dad. I feel like [I’m part of] Team Flynn.”

They created the ultimate modern family

Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel tied the knot in May 2017 and, in May 2018, grew their family with the arrival of their first child together, a son named Hart. Baby No. 2, a boy named Myles, followed in October 2019. And while Kerr found love and started fresh, so did her ex. Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry got engaged in 2019 and, in March 2020, Perry revealed they were expecting.

Rather than finding new love and growing apart, the exes have become the ultimate modern family, embracing each other, as well as their new partners. As Miranda told The Edit when she and Evan first got engaged, they had Bloom’s stamp of approval. "Orlando thinks [Evan] is great. We're just a modern family now!" she gushed.

Meanwhile, Orlando joked to Howard Stern that his “son has got Evan Spiegel as his stepdad. The titans of industry. Miranda the supermodel and Katy Perry as his [future stepmom].”

“We all get along really well; enjoy each other’s company,” Kerr toldThe Morning Show. Case in point: Just take a look at Perry supporting Kerr at her beauty launch in 2019. “We all have Flynn’s best interest at heart, so at the end of the day, that’s the most important thing,” the Victoria’s Secret model added.

Differences aren’t the enemy

Three years of marriage and two kids later, Miranda Kerr and Evan Spiegel’s union is as strong as ever. But it’s not always smooth sailing. As the couple has revealed, they don’t always see eye to eye… and that’s totally normal.

For example, while Evan told WSJ Magazine that quarantine has meant Flynn’s “screen-time restrictions are out the window,” Miranda quickly corrected, “We do limit screen time around here!” Evan even went as far as to admit that he and his wife "see the world very differently.” Calling their opposing points of view a "huge strength,” he reasoned, “There’s nothing more helpful than having someone who loves you, and knows you really well, point out a different perspective.”

By taking time to heal from her split with Orlando Bloom and focusing on what mattered most — her son — Miranda Kerr set herself up for success. Rather than rushing the process, she embraced self-care and put in the work to build a strong relationship with her ex. In moving forward, she didn’t swear off love or worry about future romances. Instead, she focused on being present. And when chance stepped in and sat her down right next to Evan Spiegel, she embraced it.

Make no mistake about it: Patrick Mahomes is the face of the NFL. The Tyler, Texas native is the son of Pat Mahomes, a former Major League Baseball player, and Randi Martin.

He burst onto the scene in 2018 when he made history by throwing 50 touchdown passes and 5,000 yards in a single season — a record he shares with Peyton Manning. He followed up his initial success by leading the Kansas City Chiefs to an incredible victory at Super Bowl LIV. If that wasn’t enough, he carried the team through to yet another Super Bowl the very next year, though they ended up losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Mahomes has gone to two more Super Bowls since and he's won back-to-back titles (2023 and 2024).
