From Wacky Outfits to IHOP Encounters, Here's Why Adam Sandler Is The Picture of Humility

The comedian's lifestyle is not what you'd expect from a typical celebrity.

Born on September 9, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York, Adam Sandler was kind of the class clown, and had no idea that someday he’d become a successful comedian and actor.

Before devoting himself to making movies Adam was a regular on MTV’s Remote Control and on NBC’s SNL. Encouraged by his brother to continue his work, the actor is now one of Hollywood’s A-listers.

A staple in American comedy, Adam has kept people laughing over the years with movies like Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy (to mention a few).

You’d think that dominating the box office for about three decades, might eventually influence someone’s ego and personality. But this is just not the case with Adam Sandler. The “Sandman” proves time and time again that he can be a successful movie star without letting his A-list status get to his head.

Many actors that have collaborated with him have said that he is one of the nicest and most genuine actors in Hollywood, and fans also agree. Cool, caring, sweet and easy to work with, Adam Sandler seems to be a rare gem and here's why.

An accidental style icon

While the comedian is clearly not the kind that you’d see keeping up with trends and wearing those overly-expensive glamorous suits, Adam’s steady flow of relaxed outfits make him a style icon.

He does have a long story of unforgivable fashion looks, but the man simply doesn’t care. Rarely deviating from his uniform consisting of a baggy t-shirt, even baggier basketball shorts and a pair of sneakers, Adam always looks ready for an after school game of basketball. Even his co-stars and friends have come to cherish his quirky style.

Well Adam doesn’t really have a great wardrobe, but that’s his thing. He actually loves it.

Of course, every now and then you’d see him wearing a suit to an award show, but not always. The funnyman is well-known for his appearances in sweat suits even to these kinds of events and also for being interviewed in track pants on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show. He’s so laid-back that he’s been seen wearing slippers to his own premieres on some occasions.

I’m not sponsored by any of those guys, no, but on occasion I’d get some free Nikes, I’ll be honest with you.

While other actors in his age range are well-dressed and have been praised for their outfits in the pages of GQ, Adam has been prioritizing comfort over fashion since the early 90s. His relaxed signature look is proof of him surviving trends and styles that have constantly changed over the decades.

It’s somewhat baffling to think that an actor reportedly worth almost half a billion dollars has remained faithful to his basic look, especially with all the influencers telling us what to wear everyday. Fast fashion has gotten us to buy things for the sake of buying. The world is now obsessed with endless consumption, but Adam’s commitment to his comfortable outfits is definitely an admirable move, defying the norms we seem to have accepted.

Although he could afford the fanciest outfits, he doesn’t care what other people think of him and simply wears what he wants. By breaking every fashion rule, Adam challenges our perception of what a good outfit looks like and has become a fashion icon for anyone who prefers comfortable clothing.

Adam Sandler’s famous IHOP encounter

From whacky outfits to walking around on the New York streets eating a jar of pickles, Adam Sandler doesn’t cease to show us just how down to earth he is. Moreover, in May 2021, after being spotted at an IHOP, the A-lister behaved just like any other human being after he’s been told he’d need to wait half an hour for a table – he walked away.

The hostess obviously didn’t recognize the star so she later posted a video on social media where she apologized to him and guess what? She got a funny, typical reaction from the Sandman on Twitter where he “had” to mention that:

For the record, I only left the IHOP because the nice woman told me the all-you-can-eat deal didn’t apply to the milkshakes.

Adam Sandler

While the truth is that he simply didn’t have the patience to sit and wait for 30 minutes, Sandler also didn’t ask for special treatment and acted totally normal without pulling out the “celebrity card”.

Let’s face it – the man could afford eating anywhere he wanted, but chose to have a normal breakfast with his family just like any other “mortal”. And this is enough to tell you that regardless of his status, he is still a man of simple taste and pleasures.

To make a mence, the chain hosted a #milkshakeMonday in Sandler’s honor and all the earnings went to charity.

Forever a humble person

Besides, Adam is also a charitable person. When he’s not directly donating for noble causes, he uses his talent to raise funds for autism awareness and for helping people in need. For all of these, Happy Gilmore has become something that not many movie stars can brag about – a celebrity that is aspirational, but also relatable.

He’s known to be nice to everyone as he’s even apologized for a parking mistake. And that’s something not many would do – celebrity or not. It’s amazing and endearing at the same time to see that someone so successful can remain so humble.

Adam is living proof that money has its perks, but real happiness is about enjoying the simple things in life. He doesn’t care about fancy clothes (one might think he even hates fashion), occasionally takes part in a local basketball game and continues to live a normal life when he’s not on a movie set.

His humble attitude to life is a great reminder never to forget where we come from.

Humility is a strength
