Little Girl Without a Father Yearns to Attend Dad-Daughter Dance - So Her Mom Comes Up With a Plan
Eleven-year-old Audrey Soape always looked forward to the father-daughter dance at her local church in Pflugerville, Texas. Dressing up in heels and dancing with her dad among her friends was the highlight of her year. But after her father’s death, she didn’t know if she’d ever get to experience that night again. How One Little Girl Experienced the Loss of 2 Important Family MembersIn March 2021, Audrey’s father passed away in a tragic accident. Five weeks later, her grandfather, who would have stepped in as her date to the dance, also passed away."It was just a very tumultuous time for all of us. Very emotional," Audrey's mother Holly Soape told CBS News. A lot of grief, a lot of sadness, a lot of anger. So anytime that I have the opportunity to bring joy or excitement into both my children's lives, I absolutely jump at that moment.Holly SoapeThe father-daughter dance was a tradition, something Audrey always got to do. While the rest of her life was completely upended, Holly knew Audrey still wanted this one thing."I knew with the dance coming up it would be an emotional thing. It would be a disappointing thing not being able to go. She brought it up a few times, saying she wished she could go," Holly said. "She even at one point asked if I would escort her to the dance. I knew that if she was going to go, that I wanted it to be something really incredible. Something that would just make her feel special and would make her feel loved and important. So I tried to think of the coolest thing that I could come up with.”How One Brilliant Idea Helped an 11-Year-Old Fulfill Her WishThat’s when Holly came up with a brilliant idea: The family had always been big fans of Anthony Harris, a football player for the Philadelphia Eagles, so Holly decided to ask him to escort her daughter to the dance.I knew it was a long-shot. I didn't really expect him to say yes. I was shocked and overjoyed when he said that he was going to do it.Holly SoapeThis request was not the first time Holly had reached out to Anthony. Since March 2020, Holly has been messaging Anthony over Instagram to offer kind words of encouragement and prayers before big games or during career transitions. Holly also sent Anthony a message the day after her husband died, hoping for some comfort from her favorite player. Why Anthony Harris Took a Little Girl to a Dad-Daughter DanceAnthony, who was raised by a single mother, wanted to support Holly and her family as much as he could. He promised that when the season was over, he would fly from his home in Florida to Texas to take Audrey to the father-daughter dance."I was like super surprised. Like, more than I can explain surprised. And I was also like, really nervous," Audrey said. "Probably more nervous than excited at the beginning, because I didn't know what I was going to say or do around him. As the night went on and time passed by, he felt more like my friend, and I could talk to him and open up to him more.”Not only did Anthony take Audrey, but he also bought her a new dress and shoes and paid for her to get her hair and makeup done.Holly went to the dance, too, after she signed up to be a chaperone at the event. She got to witness her daughter and her family’s favorite player tear it up on the dance floor. He started engaging in conversations with her, like asking how her day was, asking about her dad, sort of making her laugh, and got her out on the dance floor. As the night progressed, he really went out of his way to just make sure she felt special, that she felt comfortable and that she was having a good time.Holly SoapeThe feelings the dance created didn’t end that night."I think even days after, we were still sort of reeling from it. Like I would flip through the pictures I was like, 'That actually happened. Like, he really came,’” Holly said. "They really had a great time. And just seeing the smile on her face, it was just incredible.”How NFL Player Anthony Harris Provided a Glimmer of Hope in Dark TimesThe year was a difficult one for the Soapes, a time filled with a lot of grief and loss. But in the darkness, there were beautiful moments, too."It really kind of just changed the dialogue of the whole year. It was just this horrible, dark year that ended on this really, really positive note. And so it sort of gave us a little bit of joy and light at the end of a very dark tunnel. It was just a magical experience for everybody," Holly said.Even in dark times, there is hope to be found. For the Soapes, that hope was found in Anthony. Instead of what could have been a dark day for Audrey as she stood alone at the father-daughter dance, Anthony gave her something to smile about. He reminds us to support one another, and Audrey reminds us to keep on dancing.More from Goalcast:Boy Walks More Than 2 Hours to Make It to His Graduation – Then an NFL Star Steps Up With a Free RideFormer NFL Player Devon Was Terrified to Have More Children After His Daughter’s Cancer — Now He’s a Father of 3Woman Forced to Sell Precious Belongings to Raise Money for Grandfather’s Funeral – Then, an NFL Star Steps In
Man Finds Out a Thief Has Broken Into and Stolen From His Restaurant - His Unexpected Reaction Goes Viral
When Carl Wallace, the owner of Diablo’s Southwest Grill in Augusta, Georgia, saw that the glass on the front door of his restaurant was shattered, his initial reaction was anger.Scene of the CrimeAt 4 a.m. that morning, someone had broken into the restaurant and stolen the cash register. Unbeknownst to the thief, however, the cash register was empty. Surveillance footage shows a hooded man walking through the restaurant as alarms blare.“They’re risking so much every time they do this: To the business owner, to themselves, or what could happen if the police show up during the process of the break in,” Wallace said. From Anger to UnderstandingSoon, though, the feeling of frustration converted to forgiveness as Wallace turned to Facebook to explain to his patrons why the storefront looked different, even referring to the style as “hurricane fabulous.”“Our burritos are such a smash hit we’ve got people breaking in at 4 a.m. for their fix,” Wallace joked in his post.Instead of purely blaming the burglar, Wallace, who has been running the business for eight years now, tried to understand what motivated him. Wallace went as far as to offer the burglar a job, understanding that what he needs most is a way to make money.“To the would-be robber who is clearly struggling with life decisions or having money issues… please swing by for a job application,” Wallace wrote. “There are better opportunities out there than this path you’ve chosen.”He included his personal phone number, urging the thief to contact him.“No police, no questions. Let’s sit down and talk about how we could help you and fix the road you’re on. Sincerely Carl,” he posted.Breaking the CycleThis robbery was not an isolated incident: Wallace is pretty sure the same person has targeted at least two other businesses nearby that have surveillance footage that matches his. By reaching out personally to the burglar, he wants to “break the cycle,” he told Yahoo News.“We all as humans have to have a level of forgiveness to each other, and try to find a better way because there’s so much hate in this world… we don’t understand each other’s problems and challenges in life,” he said. The Facebook post showing Wallace’s compassion has gone viral with many of the commenters promising to order from Diablo’s to ensure that Wallace can keep helping people in need. The Power of ForgivenessForgiveness is powerful, giving some the opportunity to learn and grow and others the opportunity to help and understand. By offering the burglar a job, Wallace has shown his compassion and given the thief another chance. As humans, we all make mistakes, and forgiving each other is our greatest power.More from Goalcast:Thief Tries to Steal Woman’s Purse in Broad Daylight – But He Didn’t Expect Her 9-Year-Old Daughter to Step in and Fight HimBike-Riding Domino’s Delivery Guy Helps Cops Catch Thief — Still Manages to Deliver Pizza On TimeMom of Four Has Her Wallet Stolen by a Thief at the Grocery Store—She Confronts the Thief by Herself and Shocks Him With Her Bold Words
Single Mom Brings Her Sick Baby to Class During a Test - Her Fellow Student Captures Her Professors Surprising Reaction
*Featured image conains photo by SHVETS productionKatie Lewis thanks her five-week-old daughter, Allie, for motivating her to finish nursing school. She also thanks her professor from the University of Texas at Tyler-Palestine for holding her while Lewis took an exam.Lewis is a 22-year-old single mother in level four of nursing school. On May 2, Lewis will graduate with a Bachelor's degree of science in nursing, her baby Allie on her hip.How a Woman Juggled Single Motherhood and Nursing SchoolPhoto by Laura GarciaLewis completed 16 weeks of the hands-on portion of nursing school in only six weeks so she could spend more time with her baby once she was born. However, Lewis underwent a complication during her pregnancy, which made her work even more difficult."During my pregnancy I was diagnosed with hyperemesis," she said. "I was throwing up my entire pregnancy all day everyday. During two of my tests I was running out of the testing room to go throw up in a trash can in the hallway. It was really rough. There were times where I was ready to give up on school. It was so hard but Allie just gave me all the motivation to keep going and finish.”Even after Allie was born, Lewis continued to run into obstacles that made it harder for her to obtain her degree. Luckily, she had an incredible support system. Lewis’ mom often took care of Allie when Lewis needed it, and even Lewis’ professors began to step up."Fourteen days after I had Alianna, I had to go back to school to take a test for my leadership class," she explained. "I told Dr. George jokingly that I was mad at her because I had to leave my two-week-old baby for the first time. She said that she would have been happy to hold her. Well, fast forward three weeks and she got to hold her during a test."A Single-Mother Student, a Test and a Very Sick BabyUsually, Lewis has tests at 9:00 am, a time when her own mother can take Allie, since she works as a nurse practitioner from 12 pm to 12 am. However, when the time of her test changed, she struggled to find someone to take her child.“My mom had to work, my dad was out of town and my primary babysitter had school so I texted Dr. George a few days before the test,” Lewis said. "I said, 'Hey Dr. George, I know this is super unconventional but I’m having trouble finding a sitter for Monday for Allie because it’s in the afternoon. I know you had offered before to hold her during a test... is there anyway I can bring her with me?’"Katie LewisDr. George responded quickly.“Ummm you can totally bring her... I’m already excited!” Dr. George wrote back. How a Professor Supported Her Student in a Time of NeedOne thing neither Lewis nor Dr. George expected was a turn in Allie’s health on the day of the test. That day, Allie was diagnosed with an ear infection and un upper respiratory infection.“Dr. George without hesitation just held and rocked my sick and fussy baby throughout the entire test. Teachers like Dr. George make nursing school possible for all of us, but especially single moms. All of our teachers at the Palestine Campus care for us and help us out in any way they can for us to achieve our goals. I’m so grateful for the school and all of our amazing teachers, especially Dr. George.”How Supporting Someone Can Help Them SucceedNatalie Norman, who witnessed Dr. George’s kind act, took a photo and posted it to Facebook. “She has always told us not to miss a test and to call her if we get in a bind," Norman told Good Morning America. "Not only was she OK with it, she was so excited to hold the baby. She held her for at least an hour.”Without the help of those around her, Lewis’s mission to obtain a degree would have been exponentially harder. Dr. George reminds us that we do not have to do anything alone.
