Contractor Refuses To Charge For Repairs - After He Discovers This About the Family

"It's all about giving back."

Mark Bowman, aka The Man With Tools, is in the contracting business. But he's also in the business of doing good.

So when he found out that the family who wanted to hire him to do some much-needed repairs on their home was in the battle of their lives, he strapped on his tool belt and got to work...free of charge.

Contractor Steps Up to Help

When Mark Bowman heard that his clients' 7-year-old daughter was battling cancer, he did all of the work for free.

Mark's business slogan is "The Everything Service," and by everything he means everything. He does it all, from landscaping to repairs to home improvements.

Earlier this summer he was contacted by the Duffy family who "really needed some help with stuff."

He sent out one of his employees, Dean, to do a preliminary assessment. While there, Dean discovered that in addition to all of the repairs they needed to do, they were also living a parent's worst nightmare: Their daughter, Lucy, has stage 4 cancer. She is 7.

Since being diagnosed in January, the little girl has endured surgery to remove a kidney, radiation, and is currently undergoing an aggressive chemotherapy regime. The medical bills for her treatments have been piling up and continue to grow.

As soon as Dean shared the devastating news about Lucy, Mark did what he simply calls "the right thing."

(Only there's nothing simple about it.)

Without hesitation, he called up the family of six and told them he was going to do all of the work — for free.

"I just feel like sometimes everybody needs a break and it just so happens I was able to give them a break, so that's what I did."

Within days, Mark and his crew showed up and got to work — landscaping, bricklaying, cleaning gutters, replacing interior doors, and installing a cat door. They even came bearing gifts for each of the four kids; stuffed replicas of the company's "top dog," a daschund named Walnut.

And while Mark just shrugs it off, the Duffys say it has been life-changing.

"Mark just really came through because we couldn't afford to have a lot of this done and he just kind of took that off our plate. He was like, 'No problem, I've got this,'" mom Laura Duffy toldKDKA.

Mark believes in the power of giving back.

"It's all about giving back. It always comes back around to you. If you're doing that good it comes back around to you tenfold."

However, not only does he believe it, he lives it.

This isn't the first time the U.S. veteran has made the news for his generous giving. He was also featured in the local newspaper, the Butler Eagle, for his donation to the Butler County Humane Society.

And he's been known to help out a local homeless woman on numerous occasions.

He says his habit of doing good all comes from a place of knowing that none of us get through life unscathed. At some point, we all need a helping hand.

"At some point in our lives we all need some help and if we have the opportunity to do so we should."

(If you would like to donate to Lucy and her family, a GoFundMe has been set up in her honor.)
