'Hi Megan, It's Grandpa' - Woman Answers Sad Text from Her Lonely Grandfather in the Best Way

When one woman's grandfather asked her to come over for a sleepover, she documented the entire night, and the post went viral.

Sleepovers aren’t just for the high school crowd. When someone hangs out and spends the night, it can be fun, comforting, and exactly what the soul needs.

Megan Elizabeth said her grandfather randomly texted her one night last month and asked if she wanted to spend the night. According to the 29-year-old, she and her family grew up across the street from her grandparents in Illinois and used to spend the night there quite often. Lately, she said her grandfather had been feeling lonely and that he has been calling her in tears.

According to Elizabeth, her grandmother died of Alzheimer’s a few years ago and her grandpa was lonely. His health had also been declining and she knew he might not have a lot of time left.

Would you like to come over and have a sleepover? I haven’t been feeling well and miss you.

“Hi Megan, it’s grandpa,” he wrote in a text, which Elizabeth later shared as part of a now-viral TikTok video documenting the night. “Would you like to come over and have a sleepover? I haven’t been feeling well and miss you. We can order food and watch a mystery show. Love, grandpa.”

Elizabeth immediately responded yes, saying she’d be over by 7 p.m. She also asked whether he wanted anything from the store.

Why Spending Quality Time with Grandparents Is So Important

Elizabeth showed up at her grandfather’s house at 7 p.m., with strawberry ice cream, mashed potatoes from KFC, and cinnamon-flavoured applesauce — all items requested by her grandpa, who can only eat soft things.

The two hung out and ate food while watching an old black-and-white TV show together. Elizabeth shared a cute photo of her grandpa eating his dessert in a chair. “I can’t get over how cute he is eating the ice cream cone,” she added.

[He] made my bed how he used to make it when I was little.

She also revealed that after dinner, her grandfather made sure she would be set up for the evening and gave her a glass of water. “[He] made my bed how he used to make it when I was little with my favourite doll of my grandma’s (rest in peace). And gave me a flashlight ‘in case I got scared,’” she added.

While the visit was certainly meaningful for Elizabeth’s grandfather, it was meaningful for her, too. “Staying here brings back so many good memories from my childhood,” she added towards the end of the video. “I love my grandpa so much.”

Unfortunately, Elizabeth had to leave at 5:30 a.m. the next morning to go to work, so they didn’t get to continue the sleepover with a leisurely breakfast or chat. However, her grandfather did wake up early with her and waved goodbye as she left.

I believe in love and loyalty because of this man. He is my hero.

“My grandpa is very sick and doesn’t have much time left,” she added. “His health is declining so I take any opportunity to see him. I am thankful for my grandpa and he will never understand how much love he truly has shown me. And more importantly, the love he showed my grandma while she was alive. I believe in love and loyalty because of this man. He is my hero.”

Why You Should Be Making Time for the People You Love

Elizabeth knows she might not have a lot of time left with her grandfather so she’s making the most of the time they do have together now. But the truth is, no one really knows how much time any of us has left. This story reminds us how important it is to carve out time to spend with the people you love today, and not put it off.

It doesn’t have to be a sleepover, although that can certainly be a fun way to spend time with loved ones. It can be something as simple as a phone call, a coffee date, a dinner, lunch, or an afternoon walk together. Pick up the phone, send the text and make plans. You’ll be happy that you did.
