Mom 'Desperately' Fills Kiddie Pool With Pots of Water on Hot Summer Day - Gets Unexpected Help From Firefighters

When firefighters noticed a mom was struggling to fill her kiddie pool they stepped in to save the day.

Acts of kindness can always make or break a day. Those who serve communities are well aware of that, as one group of firefighters proved in a heartwarming story from 2018 that still resonates today.

Back then, a woman in North Carolina was trying to help her kids enjoy what wound up being a pretty hot day in the sun. It was her young son’s birthday and she was motivated to fill up their kiddie pool for him so he could splash around and have some extra fun. The only problem was she didn’t have a hose.

The strong woman was determined, however, so she started filling up the large pool with pots of water from the house. She made trip after trip as the sun beat down, making slow progress. All the while about five kids waited around, wondering how long it would be before they could start splashing.

Just then, a truck from Charlotte Fire Station 18 drove by, returning from a medical call. The firefighters weren’t in a hurry and they quickly noticed the family trying to orchestrate a cool reprieve.

“[The family was] desperately trying to fill up a kiddie pool by filling pots from the sink for a little boy’s birthday on this sweltering day,” the station later shared in a Facebook post. Since the crew had reserve water on the truck, it only took seconds to stop and extend a great kindness by filling the pool up for them.

Not only did the team fill up the pool, however, but they stuck around for a visit, helping to make the boy’s birthday even more special. In the end, they posed for photos with the family (who were finally able to cool off), and they shared the story wide with their community.

People were so touched, the post received more than 1,400 likes and was shared widely.

What was just a simple task for us turned into laughter, smiles, and a lifelong memory for the neighbourhood kids as well as the men on Engine 18. Proud to serve the WESTSIDE!

We often think about the big jobs people in service positions do, but it’s always nice to be able to hear about the everyday things they do for their communities as well. These firefighters didn’t have to stop that hot day and help out a family, nor did they know they would wind up being the unexpected guests of honor at a young boy’s birthday party. They stopped simply because they saw a family in need and they knew they could help.

It’s a nice reminder to practice kindness in our everyday lives too. Maybe it’s stepping in and taking a load for a mom you see struggling to balance her baby and her things. Or perhaps it’s mowing the lawn for a neighbor who has had a hard time with mobility lately. It could be something as simple as holding the door open for a person whose hands are full.

The point is, the next time you see someone struggling or in need of an extra hand, maybe consider being the person who helps rather than going about your own day. Sometimes a small act that only takes minutes of your own time can be the breaking factor when it comes to how someone else’s day will play out.
